Overview
This mountainous country was once part of Yugoslavia, but is now an independent state in the Balkan Peninsula. Three ethnic groups, Bosniaks, Croats, and Serbs, comprise the country commonly called simply Bosnia. Each ethnic group has its own language, but the differences are small and the languages are collectively referred to as Serbo-Croatian.
The capital, Sarajevo, is historically picturesque, but also modern. Stone bridges cross the river as a reminder of a time before concrete. Mosques and the architecture of the Orient vie for space with Catholic churches and medieval European charm. Museums tell the stories of this country and region while the city itself lures you into its cafes to wonder what’s next. Outside of Sarajevo, you’ll find other fun cities and many rural villages where life moves at a more relaxed pace and foreign visitors are rare (but welcome).
NatureBosnia and Herzegovina is a country of rivers and mountains. As such, nature can be enjoyed with a tranquil walk or by taking on an adventure sport. If you want to spend time on the water, consider kayaking or taking a white water rafting trip on one of the many rivers like the Neretva or Vrbas. To really dig in, head to Rakitnica Canyon where you can swim, climb, and hike through the canyon. In winter, strap on some skis, the mountains here offer an awesome alpine experience.
CuisineBosnian food is heavy on meat served in many fashions. Even dishes that look vegetarian at first glance are likely to have been made with an animal broth or have little bits of bacon hidden inside. Smoked meats are the most popular with sausages, pork ribs, and bacon as common delights. This is a country were smoked meat is an art form. Bosnian salami is allowed to age in a smokehouse for three months to both cure it and infuse it with smoky flavor. Meats are put into soups and served on platters with accompaniments like bread, dumplings, or sometimes a salad.
The people here like their sweets, too, and often have cookies or little cakes in the middle of the afternoon with coffee. Visitors to local homes are usually treated to this pleasure as well as with a tray of smoked meats. Travelers can also sample excellent pastries from the bakeries and cafes throughout the country. You might try tulumbe, which is similar to a donut, or the local version of baklava. For something a little creamier, go for krempita, a type of custard.
