Overview
Denver, the Mile-High City, is located on the edge of Rocky Mountains in Colorado. The city sits 5,2800 feet above sea level and fifteen miles east of the Rockies. The city is known for both sports and the arts. The Denver Art Museum has a superior collection of Western and American Indian Art that rivals anything you could find in New York or DC.
Denver is also an excellent base for exploring the Rocky Mountains. You can spend a day or two here before heading deep into the mountains or stay in the city and make day trips into the mountains. Whichever you choose, you’ll have the options of hiking, skiing, biking, horseback riding, and enjoying water sports.
Kid FriendlyDenver is a fun city for kids. You can take them hiking in the nearby mountains, to a football or baseball game, or just kick around the city center checking out parks and museums.
The Denver Museum of Nature and Science offers hands-on learning. A new permanent exhibit called Expedition Health encourages kids (and adults) to learn how our bodies work by using them! You can test your endurance, monitor your heart rate, and conduct experiments on breakfast cereal.
Elitch Gardens Theme Park occupies seventy acres of downtown Denver. There are rides just for kids, rides designed for the whole family, and thrill rides for grown ups only. The park includes both an amusement park and water park. Arcade games, shows, and concerts can keep everyone busy when you tire of rides.
Lollipop Park Indoor Children’s Amusement Park is good for bad weather days and for days when you just want to let the kids run around while you sit idly with a cup of coffee. You can do that here or enjoy rides, laser tag, ice skating, and mini golf with the kiddos.
Spectator SportsThe Denver Broncos NFL team plays at Invesco Field at Mile High and tickets are tough to get. Broncos games usually sell out well in advance. The Broncos solidified as a team in the 1980s and were a powerhouse team in the 1990s when they won two Super Bowls with iconic quarterback John Elway. Since then, the team has struggled but has gone to the playoff four times this century. Fans remain loyal, the team popular, and everyone hopeful for the future.
The Colorado Rockies games are much easier to get tickets for. They’ve had several losing seasons in recent years, but did win the National League Pennant in 2007 (this hasn’t increased attendance at games, though).
The Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche both play at the Pepsi Center. The Nuggets (basketball) are quickly gaining in popularity these days and tickets are becoming harder to get. You’ll definitely want to book Avalanche (hockey) tickets in advance as they usually sell out.
