  • Overview

Myrtle Beach is a coastal resort town in South Carolina. Despite frequent heavy rainfall, Myrtle Beach is primarily a beach and outdoor vacation destination. Travelers arrive all year to enjoy the beaches, which are particularly popular with residents of northern states looking for someplace a bit warmer to visit in the winter (snow is rare in Myrtle Beach).

In late summer, travelers should take into account that it rains almost daily, thunderstorms are frequent, and that it is hurricane season. Myrtle Beach is affected by hurricane activity about every other year, but direct hits by hurricanes are much less frequent.

Any time of year, Myrtle Beach is a fun destination perfect for families, couples, or groups of friends looking to get away from it all for a while.

    Kid Friendly

With more mini golf courses per square mile than any other location in the world, a stunning boardwalk, sandy beaches, and an amusement park, it is easy to entertain kids in Myrtle Beach.

Both National Geographic and Travel + Leisure have recognized the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk as one of America’s best boardwalks. The boardwalk opened in 2010, four years after the minimal remnants of the original boardwalk closed down. The boardwalk is over a mile long and is divided into sections including a carnival-like area with arcades and cotton candy and an oceanfront park.

Family Kingdom Amusement Park and Water Park is one of the few remaining seaside amusement parks in the United States. The park combines classic rides like a wooden roller coaster and a Ferris wheel with new thrills like the Slingshot Drop Zone. The water park has all the usual favorites from near-vertical drop slides to a lazy river. There is also a section of the water park just for kids with fountains and smaller, gentler water slides.

    Touristy

Myrtle Beach is one of the most popular beach destinations on the east coast attracting 14.6 million visitors annually. The town draws millions of dollars of revenue from tourism each year.

The high tourism numbers have attracted many more people to the area. It is a popular place for conventions, family reunions, and business getaways. Musical acts and other performers are also drawn to the reliable tourist destination and Myrtle Beach hosts many celebrity performances each year.

Several events and festivals take place each year that draw even larger crowds to Myrtle Beach. These events include Canadian-American Days in March, the Sun Fun Festival in June, and Bike Week every May.
