Overview
Located in the south central region of Texas, the city of San Antonio is fully part of the American Southwest. The cultures of Texas and Mexico collide here in the daily life, cuisine, and history. The blending allows excellent arts and cultural events to flourish including a ten-day festival called Fiesta, which celebrates the battles of The Alamo and San Jacinto.
San Antonio is still a military town. Joint Base San Antonio, Brooks City-Base, and Camp Bullis are located there. The defense industry in San Antonio is a major contributor to the economy. Other major industries in San Antonio include tourism, health care, and financial services.
San Antonio receives over 26 million visitors each year and the city knows how to entertain them. The urban center is filled with museums, theaters, and restaurants. It is a green city with thousands of acres of parks including the River Walk, a quiet, lush walkway along the San Antonio River.
HistoricalSan Antonio is the location of the Alamo, a Spanish mission and the site of a major battle over the Texan border. Texan settlers fought Mexican invaders at the Alamo to protect their land with the sense that possession of the Alamo was essential to their further protection. You can visit the Alamo and four other missions in San Antonio as part of the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park.
There are many military history sites and museums to visit in San Antonio. You can tour Fort Sam Houston at the Joint Base. There are also museums at the Joint Base including Air Force History and Traditions Museum.
San Antonio also has many sites where you can learn about Hispanic heritage, which you will note the influence of throughout the city. The United States’ largest collection of Latin art is located at the San Antonio Museum of Art. There are also many Hispanic heritage events held every year.
Kid FriendlyIf you’re bringing the kids to San Antonio, there’s plenty to do here. Most of the historic sites like The Alamo will interest the older ones and offer plenty for the whole family to do another.
The Witte Museum of History and Science allows families to discover a variety of topics in one place. The highlight for most kids is the H-E-B Science Treehouse, which is full of interactive science exhibits.
If you want to fill a day but only park the car once, Six Flags Fiesta Texas has got you covered. This amusement park offers children’s rides, rides safe for the whole family, and thrill rides plus a water park. There’s also plenty of food, shopping, and shows to keep you entertained.
